After 20 years on the bench, including seven as the chief justice of the Superior Court of Quebec, Jacques Fournier decided he wanted to go back into practice. This week, he joined the disputes group at Canada’s largest law firm.

At 71, he officially retired from the bench last June—four years before the mandatory retirement age of 75, telling Law.com International that leading through the pandemic was extremely demanding and he felt he “needed something else.” He also thought he should make space for a new leader on the court, he said. Chief Justice Marie-Anne Paquette was named to replace Fournier.
