Europe’s Unified Patent Court—a planned new single authority for patent disputes and enforcement—has taken a major step forward with the appointment of 85 judges from across the European Union.

The appointments brings the UPC, which is still in its development phase, that bit closer to formation. In February 2013, 24 EU member states signed the UPC agreement which formed the basis of a court common to the member states and “thus part of their judicial system”. While provisional application of the UPC agreement was triggered in January 2022, the court is yet to fully launch.
