Measuring the legal industry’s progress in attempting to become more diverse and promote Black talent is no easy task.

Most studies in the area relate to data. Law.com International’s 2022 diversity survey of 68 major legal institutions in the U.K. found that 2.2% of lawyers and 1.05% of partners are Black, compared with 4.1% of the wider population. Firms including White & Case, Morrison & Foerster, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Debevoise & Plimpton ranked well.
