Following in the footsteps of Germany and France, the European Union’s executive body unveiled a highly anticipated proposal Wednesday that aims to make large companies accountable for human rights and environmental abuses across their supply chains.

Under the new rules, companies would be required to monitor, prevent and account for adverse human rights and environmental impacts in their own operations, those of their subsidiaries and their entire value chains across the world. Examples of harmful impacts include child labor, worker exploitation, pollution and biodiversity loss.
