Baker & McKenzie has come up short in an effort to ward off a malpractice suit in Chicago that alleges the firm botched a client’s bid to recover ownership of a Siberian coal mine worth $200 million. 

An Illinois state court judge on Tuesday dismissed the global law firm’s motion that argued that the dispute belonged in Russia’s courts, pointing to the client’s documented fear of violence in the region surrounding the mine.
