A group of 60,000 citizens is taking several levels of the Belgian government to court over what they say are its failures to take decisive climate action.

The 11 founding members of the nonprofit Climate Case begun legal proceedings in 2015. Since then, 58,586 citizens have joined as co-claimants. Oral pleadings before a Brussels court only begun this week due to procedural delays concerning the question of whether the proceedings should be held in Dutch or French, both official languages of Belgium.
