Citing a mix of practice area strength and a “flight-to-quality” client mantra, Sidley Austin increased revenue by 5.4% last year to about $2.46 billion and crossed the $3 million profits per partner threshold with a nearly 10% gain.

The Chicago firm also saw a 10.4% surge in net income, to $974 million. Lawyer head count fell by about 2%, to just over 1,880—a downtick firm leaders said was mostly caused by delaying a start date for associates, as well as a slowdown in lateral hiring amid the move to remote work.

The firm noted that revenue in London totaled £109 million—up by about 11% from £98 million in 2019, and management committee chair Larry Barden said both the London and Asia offices “had really some of their best years ever for us.”
