It’s Budget week and one of the few certainties in life alongside death and taxes is that the general public share an unhealthy interest in how much other people earn.

This interest is heightened when those people happen to work in banks, where the furore over bonuses and take-home pay shows no sign of abating. And it reaches a fever pitch when the executive pay being dissected in the press belongs to scandal-hit mutual the Co-operative.
