Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has topped M&A rankings in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region in 2012, with the firm edging ahead of key City rivals in an inevitably subdued deal market, according to new research.

Figures from Legal Week‘s exclusive data provider Mergermarket show Freshfields chalked up 224 global deals worth $259.6bn (£161.8bn) over the year, while Clifford Chance (CC), Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Linklaters secured third, fourth and fifth places respectively on the global charts by value.
