Later this month (24 October) auction house Sotheby’s will be selling off the contents of The Chanter’s House in Devon, formerly home to various bigwigs throughout judicial history.

The sale will see Sotheby’s flogging garments once worn by judges who dished out actual floggings at the drop of a hat. Speaking of which, headgear is also catered for in the form of two black caps worn by 19th-century judges when handing out hangings to miscreant plebs – items which could make a fetching Christmas gift for that frustrated litigator in your life.
