The Renewables Obligation Order (Northern Ireland) 2005 (NIRO) is intended to support international commitments to address climate change by reducing emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
It also addresses the need to reduce Northern Ireland’s (NI’s) high dependency on imports of increasingly scarce fossil fuels.
