The law firm limited liability partnership (LLP) is clearly on the rise. The current vogue for this alternative to the traditional partnership structure provides an interesting point in time from which to look back and consider how law firm management has evolved.

This particular chapter in the legal professional’s story began in the mid-to-late 1980s, most notably with the loss of the conveyancing monopoly; this was the first time that the profession faced real competition from outside and it marked the start of a journey for many of its members to respond and change from dusty professional practices to well organised legal businesses.
