“I was at home, watching television, when I heard the announcement on CNN,” says Chris Campbell, managing partner of Dundas & Wilson. “The news had been emerging day by day, so we were aware of the possibility that Andersens was going to be indicted and we had begun to question whether there would be a knock-on effect for the law firms.”

The shockwaves triggered by the news that Andersen, the big five global accountancy firm, was to be indicted for its role in the accounting scandal at Enron had special resonance for Campbell and his firm. The Andersen Legal link-up it had entered into in a blaze of publicity five years before – always a source of fascination for the rest of the Scottish legal market – was fast becoming a liability.
