As Legal Week reported last week, the ‘hot favourite’ for Allen & Overy’s new HQ is Spitalfields market. It seems perfect – it’s central, it’s near the tube, it’s nowhere near Canary Wharf – but it also faces opposition from those trying to protect the former fruit and veg market currently occupying part of the site.

If the scheme does become embroiled in a planning battle, it looks like they can count on the support of the Corporation of London, whose head of policy, Judith Mayhew, recently described some of the market traders currently residing at Spitalfields as “beads and bangles people”.
