A swath of New York judges are pushing state lawmakers to support so-called “death gamble” legislation that would increase pension benefits their beneficiaries receive—to reverse an anomaly in law that has caused many jurists to retire prematurely.

A coalition of 18 judges’ associations wrote to legislative leaders on Thursday, urging passage of S7567A/A9143, which they said wouldn’t altogether eliminate the “gamble,” as lawmakers have done for police officers, firefighters and teachers.
