Justice Samuel Alito joined a number of U.S. Supreme Court decisions that strongly benefited a billionaire acquaintance (maybe, friend)—Paul Singer, an extremely activist hedge fund manager and billionaire who has reportedly given $80 million to Republican political groups.  Years earlier in 2008, however, Singer had treated Alito to a lavish fishing trip in Alaska.

Alito maintains that he didn’t know that Singer had a huge financial stake in the corporations that later prevailed at the Supreme Court, with Alito voting in their favor. Who knows? This article, though, isn’t about Alito’s role. It’s more about that of Singer and other extremely well-heeled Americans who tend to focus their largesse on people in high office.
