Former environmental lawyer Steven Donziger, who helped win an $8.6 billion oil-pollution judgment in Ecuador against Chevron before being disbarred and later convicted of criminal contempt of court, regained his freedom on Monday following 993 days of home detention.

Donziger entered home detention in 2019 while awaiting trial for contempt after he refused to turn over his cell phone and computer to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan during the post-judgment proceedings of a 2011 lawsuit Chevron filed against Donziger. He was convicted on six criminal contempt charges in October and spent 45 days in Danbury Federal Prison before being returned home in December after his lawyers lobbied for his release as part of a CARES Act program.
