After Tropical Storm Irene soaked New York state over the weekend, it left a number of closed courts and reduced services in its wake yesterday. In the aftermath, courts were open in New York City’s five boroughs. But in 10 of the state’s counties to the northwest of the city, where there was significant flooding, courts were closed yesterday. The southernmost affected county was Orange County in the mid-Hudson region while the northernmost was Essex County in the Adirondacks. And in many upstate counties where courts remained open, jurors and potential jurors were instructed not to report to court and instructed to check the local jury commissioner’s office last evening for future instructions.
To the east of the city, newly summoned grand jurors in Nassau County were instructed to instead appear today instead of yesterday, while in Suffolk County jurors were told not to report to court and instead call a phone number for a new appearance date.
