A former village attorney who advised officials on the decision to indemnify the former mayor in a defamation action, cannot now represent the former mayor in a lawsuit against the village for revoking the indemnification, a federal district judge has ruled.

Eastern District Judge Denis R. Hurley, who sits in Central Islip, disqualified Harrison J. Edwards, a former Freeport village attorney, and his firm from representing William F. Glacken, the former mayor who is Mr. Edwards’ brother in law, in an action against village officials who reversed their decision to fund Mr. Glacken’s defense.
