Goodale, former vice chairman of The New York Times and producer/host of the television program "Digital Age," writes that Senator Charles Schumer said recently on Fox News that he wants to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, a relic of the pre-cable and Internet era that requires over-the-air broadcasters to present balanced programming. The theory behind the doctrine was that because there were so few over-the-air TV channels and radio stations, the FCC could regulate what was said on them. That may have made sense then, before widespread cable television and the Internet, but it makes no sense now.
