An Old Saybrook man was awarded $199,843 after a Superior Court jury found his back and neck pain were the result of being tossed around the inside of his vehicle during a crash, and not his arthritis.

The six-person jury deliberated for 90 minutes before handing down its verdict against Liberty Mutual Insurance in favor of Mark Hoben on June 1. Hoben already received $15,000 from IFA Insurance, the carrier for Alicia M. Rivera, the underinsured driver who struck him. Hoben then sued Liberty Mutual, his own insurance provider, whose underinsured policy was $250,000.
