BlackBerry maker Research in Motion said Thursday it's developed software "workaround" designs for its popular handsets in case a court bars the use of current software in a pending patent dispute with NTP. A federal judge has indicated he could decide on NTP's request to turn off the network following a hearing scheduled for Feb. 24.

Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday it has developed software “workaround” designs for its popular BlackBerry wireless e-mail handsets should a federal judge in Richmond, Va., bar the use of current software in a pending patent dispute.
Although there is no injunction in place in the patent litigation with NTP Inc., RIM said it developed the workaround software as a contingency to allow BlackBerry service to continue should the court declare an injunction.
