At last week’s Amazon annual meeting, the company’s executive compensation received 68% support, up from 56% in 2022, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing May 26. Until this year, support had steadily fallen after reaching 97% in 2019.

The so-called say-on-pay votes are purely advisory and nonbinding. Even so, the votes can pressure companies to rethink their pay practices. Apple this year responded to criticism of its executive pay by cutting CEO Tim Cook’s 2023 target pay to $49 million, a 40% reduction.
