PALO ALTO — Paul Hastings has poached an entertainment and technology partner from Cooley.

David Hernand joined the firm’s mergers and acquisitions practice in Los Angeles Tuesday.

In a statement, Hernand said he was drawn to the firm’s “strong Los Angeles connectivity and international platform, and unmatched commitment to client service and innovation.”

He joins after two years at Cooley. He previously led Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s media, entertainment and technology practice and cofounded Latham & Watkins’ venture and technology practice prior to that. His clients have included DIRECTV, DreamWorks Animation, Mattel, Nordstrom, Pritzker Group Venture Capital, Relativity Media, Saban Capital, SK Telecom, United Talent Agency, Upfront Ventures and William Morris.

Paul Hastings M&A practice chairman Carl Sanchez said Hernand would help the firm respond to growing pressures and disruptions on technological and regulatory fronts. Elizabeth Noe, chairwoman of the corporate practice, added that Hernand would complement the firm’s Washington, D.C.-based telecommunications, media and technology group and help advance the firm’s charge in the high-tech space.

“David’s addition allows us to fill a demand in this burgeoning area where clients will increasingly need advisers who are well versed in both the innovative culture of the sector and sophisticated transactional work,” Sanchez said.
