LOS ANGELES — Black Entertainment Television and parent company Viacom Inc. are asking a federal judge to toss a discrimination suit brought by former top executive Zola Mashariki, who was fired after being diagnosed with breast cancer and has slammed the cable network as “hostile to women.”

In motions to dismiss filed Tuesday, BET and Viacom’s attorneys at Paul Hastings derided Mashariki’s May 3 complaint as a “shotgun pleading” that was aimed more at garnering media attention than at addressing any alleged wrongdoing. They also refuted the former executive’s characterization of BET as a workplace that marginalizes and demeans women.
