Today’s column discusses the overall effect of the very large number of law firm mergers in the past 20 years. Firms have merged, not only in local geographic areas, but often with firms in other states, and international locations. There are media reports of a predicted increase in mergers in the next three years. Aside from sheer numbers, what is the overall effect on law firm culture, morale, hiring, training and marketing?

As with most major changes in industry or professional practices, there are many effects, some good, some troublesome. What is important to recognize is that with many mergers, the operation of the legal profession is different than 20 years ago.
