A putative class action complaint alleging a data breach at information technology provider Maintech exposed the personal information of a group of individuals was dismissed last week by a federal judge after the plaintiffs failed to prove a direct relationship with the business.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey as Robinson v. Maintech, alleged that a data breach resulted in the unauthorized disclosure of the plaintiff’s personal information, including their names, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses and financial information. The named plaintiff, Mark Robinson, alleged that he was a data breach victim, although, in his complaint, he stated that he does not know why Maintech possessed his personal information in the first place. Third parties provided Maintech with the PII, according to the opinion.
