A California jury awarded $18.8 million to a 24-year-old man who alleged Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder caused his mesothelioma.

The verdict comes in a rare trial that began May 31 despite an automatic stay halting talc lawsuits from going before jurors after Johnson & Johnson’s unit, LTL Management LLC, filed for bankruptcy this year. The case, in Oakland, is the first talc trial in nearly two years involving Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder.
