Attorneys representing an association of black firefighters that has intervened in litigation over the New York City Fire Department's hiring practices have received a $3.7 million interim award for legal fees and costs—though they were seeking more than $8 million.

The attorneys from Levy Ratner, Scott + Scott and the Center for Constitutional Rights have "worked tirelessly in the name of civil rights, and worked without remuneration—until now," Eastern District Judge Nicholas Garaufis (See Profile) wrote Friday in United States v. City of New York, 07-cv-2067.
