An Equal Employment Opportunity Commission administrative judge in New York City awarded damages and back pay for a plaintiff who claimed they were subjected to “dehumanizing” treatment based on their gender identity on the first day of a U.S. Postal Service orientation for new letter carriers.

The $40,000 compensatory damages award comes amid a growing tide of transgender discrimination charges brought to the EEOC following the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2020 ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County that extended workplace protections to LGBTQ+ individuals under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
