A proposal by New York’s executive branch to take $100 million from a decades-old fund that pays for low-income state residents’ civil legal services continues to face significant pushback from lawyers’ groups.

At issue is the New York State Interest on Lawyer Account Fund, or IOLA, which funds 81 nonprofit legal organizations in all New York regions. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s budget proposes to place the $100 million in the state general reserve.
