Through a legal career spanning more than half a century, Fern Schair was committed to helping low-income New Yorkers—particularly with ensuring that they can access legal representation, despite having modest financial means.

Schair, who died in January at 80 years old after battling ovarian cancer, began her career as a civil legal services attorney following her 1965 graduation from the St. John’s University School of Law and ultimately became chair of Legal Services NYC, according to a statement from the New York City Bar Association announcing Schair’s death.
