Two candidate names were submitted earlier this month to Gov. Kathy Hochul for the next presiding justice of the Manhattan-based Appellate Division, First Department, after three candidates applied for the position and were interviewed by the state’s screening committee, according to a source with knowledge of the facts.

Hochul’s office is expected to appoint one of the two candidates to the role of overseeing one of the most vital state appeals courts in the nation, with its high-volume handling of Manhattan- and Bronx-based cases that delve into a wide array of issues and institutions—from Wall Street to Family Court to the government.
