Two U.S. Merchant Marine Academy midshipmen are suing the shipping company Maersk, alleging that they faced sexual harassment and, in one case, sexual assault while participating in the USMMA “Sea Year” program aboard Maersk ships.

Attorneys at Sanford Heisler Sharp and Maritime Legal Solutions represent the women, who allege that the assault and harassment they faced on the ships was foreseeable and that Maersk failed to take reasonable measures to protect them. One plaintiff, named Hope Hicks, filed her suit Tuesday, while the other, going by the name Midshipman-Y, is currently seeking the court’s approval to proceed anonymously.
