Attorneys for Donald Trump on Wednesday formally began a new effort to shield the former president’s tax returns from Congress, after the Biden administration said it planned to abide by a new Department of Justice legal memo finding officials had to comply with lawmakers’ requests for the documents.

DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel on Friday overturned the findings of a Trump-era memo against the release of the returns to the House Ways and Means Committee and said Treasury officials should provide the records under a provision in the tax law. The Biden administration said in court later that day that officials intended to comply with the OLC opinion, but would give Trump’s attorneys a chance to litigate the issue.
