The Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel said Friday the Treasury Department “must” comply with a congressional request to obtain former President Donald Trump’s tax returns through a provision in tax law, overturning a prior finding made by the office during the Trump administration.

The new opinion states that, while there must be a legitimate legislative purpose in seeking the returns from the Treasury Department, officials also must give lawmakers the benefit of the doubt and assume they are acting in good faith when it comes to the request.
