President Donald Trump said Monday that U.S. Attorney General William Barr is stepping down next week, capping a nearly two-year tenure in which he oversaw the end of the Russia investigation and came under widespread condemnation for undermining the Justice Department’s independence.

In a tweet, Trump said Barr will leave the Justice Department before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family. Trump described his relationship with Barr as a “very good one,” even after the attorney general fell out of favor with the president for acknowledging that the Justice Department had not uncovered widespread voter fraud.
