Retired California Superior Court Judge LaDoris Cordell last week described attending a crowded open house in Palo Alto back when she was still a sitting judge.

The realtor, a white woman, walked up to Cordell, the first Black woman to sit on a Superior Court bench in Northern California, as soon as she entered and said “This house is for sale, not for rent.”
