LinkedIn recently had some professional connections it wasn’t so fond of—bots. The networking site filed a lawsuit for breach of contract in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against these unknown users who registered thousands of fake accounts with automated software, according to a post by Sabrina Dunlap on McDermott Will & Emery’s on the Digital Interest Blog.

The professional social networking site claims the bots scraped member data to compete with services already provided by LinkedIn, such as LinkedIn Recruiter, which is used by companies to search for job candidates. The company argues “that members trust LinkedIn and expect that members’ professional profiles are legitimate,” says Dunlap.
