Texans have voted for their first Tea Party-backed Texas Supreme Court candidate, as John Devine handily defeated incumbent Justice David Medina in the July 31 Republican primary runoff.

But Devine may confound those who see a traditional affinity between Republicans and tort reform groups. Devine notes he’s a firm believer in upholding jury verdicts and he is troubled by the high court’s reputation for overturning them. He also says Texans for Lawsuit Reform — what he calls “one of the most feared lobbies in Texas” — opposed him in the race.
