Doctors didn’t damage patient’s liver, jury finds

On Aug. 30, a jury found that two doctors weren’t to blame for a patient’s liver abscess that nearly killed him. Stephen McFarland claimed that gastroenterologists John Secor and John Lee allowed a biliary stent to remain in McFarland’s body for about 17 months. Both doctors agreed that Lee was the one who should have told the plaintiff that the stent should be removed, but they maintained that Lee did inform McFarland. The defense argued that the abscess resulted from McFarland’s history of hepatitis C and alcoholic cirrhosis.
