On Jan. 24, 55th District Judge Jeff Shadwick of Houston vacated an order for new trial in a legal-malpractice case. That’s unusual, because the order was signed in September 2010 by Shadwick’s predecessor, former 55th District Judge Dion Ramos, who lost to Shadwick in the November 2010 election.

In his Jan. 24 order Shadwick wrote that Ramos failed to explain his reasons for granting the plaintiff’s motion for new trial in Park National Capital Funding LLC v. Michael B. Massey ,and therefore “the court created the impression that it impermissibly substituted its judgment for that of the jury.”
