Last year was a mixed bag for southern California-based Am Law 200 firms. While some turned in strong financial performances, others suffered declines in gross revenue that suggest an industry still facing challenges.

Ranging in size from 138 to 465 attorneys, the firms in question practice in various areas, including real estate, bankruptcy and corporate matters. For most, though, litigation dominates. And while some of these firms have offices elsewhere in the state or country, most of their lawyers are based in southern California–making their financial performance a reasonable barometer of how the legal sector in one region is bouncing back from the recession.
