The Pennsylvania State University’s alma mater contains the line “May no act of ours bring shame.” Regrettably, the university has failed to live up to this mantra in recent weeks or perhaps longer. The biggest scandal in higher education hit Penn State like a 250-pound Big 10 linebacker this month when sexual abuse allegations against a former football coach were divulged in a Pennsylvania grand jury report.

As an alumnus, I’m sad, disappointed, angry and confused. As a public relations professional, I’m shocked that the university wasn’t prepared. So many important lessons have emerged already in this ongoing tragedy. What traps did Penn State fall into? And how can you and your organization avoid them so that the critical lens of the camera doesn’t focus intensely on you?
