The city of New York must provide monetary compensation to as many as 7,400 black and Hispanic victims of the city’s discriminatory written examinations for entry-level firefighters, institute priority hiring for as many as 293 of those victims and develop a new, non-biased testing procedure for future applicants, Eastern District Judge Nicholas G. Garaufis ruled yesterday in an interim remedial order.

The order provides the first look at the eventual relief in the class action filed against the city in 2007 on behalf of black and Hispanic firefighters. The action alleges the two firefighter exams used from 1999 until 2007, Written Examinations 7029 and 2043, discriminated against minority applicants.
