In April of last year, Joel Gordon, a Seattle real estate lawyer with GordonDerr, asked his long-time neighbor, energy attorney Steven Seward, for advice about a new hire for Gordon’s boutique.

During dinner with their wives at a Greek restaurant near their homes in Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill neighborhood, Seward mentioned that he was preparing to start work at Van Ness Feldman’s Seattle office. “I started thinking out loud about the ways in which I thought his firm and VNF meshed and how that was something we should explore,” Seward said in an e-mail.
