Sullivan & Cromwell’s H. Rodgin Cohen was seemingly everywhere at once as the U.S. financial system teetered on the brink of collapse in autumn 2008. Cohen counseled clients on more than 20 transactions amid the chaos, among them the rescue-financing deals for American International Group Inc. and Fannie Mae and the sales of Bear Stearns, Wachovia and Lehman Brothers. As he helped his banking clients cut deals right and left, Cohen, 65, was also working with senior government officials to craft its response to the financial meltdown, which became the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.
