Is it a wise governance move to hand off a major internal investigation to your general counsel? That’s what Rupert Murdoch’s New York-based News Corporation did this week when it announced that its Management and Standards Committee will now report to Gerson Zweifach, group general counsel.

Zweifach has only been with the company since January. But the committee has been investigating the phone hacking scandal at its British newspaper unit, News International Ltd., and payments to the police and other related issues for nearly a year.
