Antitrust attorneys expect the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission to ramp up merger scrutiny in President-elect Barack Obama’s administration and boost negotiation and document review work for lawyers.

If companies plan to merge and the companies, or the deal, meet a certain size threshold, they must file a premerger notification with both DOJ and the FTC. The agencies decide which one will handle the review, which begins with an initial 30-day screening.
