Last year was an unusual combination of deal doldrums and bare-knuckled lawyering for Silicon Valley deal makers. The new year could be even worse, unless swooning share prices can bring buyers back out.

Huge hostile takeover bids and deal-saving renegotiations in the face of the crumbling economy had transactional lawyers in the spotlight. But overall, 2008 was one of the slowest years in recent memory as the economic crisis that began on Wall Street cast a shadow over Silicon Valley.
